Because stuff other than Gigbeth has been happening. No, really…
- Iron Man Records annouces: – 22nd November 2008 Birmingslam Hardcore Collective Present at The GO! Club, The Old Wharf, Digbeth, Birmingham. As above!
- Eye blog » Type, tart cards, T-shirts and crosses Plus International Design Exhibition in Birmingham – Review by Chris Unitt. ‘The ‘Tart cards’ project drew plenty of interest.’ I’ll bet it did. God, we humans are so predictable.
- Denise – the hats! – Russ L gives a mixed review of Capsule’s Release The Bats gig at the Custard Factory, ’sort of enjoyed it and sort of didn’t.’
- Andy Pryke’s Eastside Halloween – ‘Wandered down to the (newish) Eastside Projects Space when I took part in a interesting space-age maze installation which involved wearing a helmets which made you look like an alien. All the participants had cameras – either in the helmet, on in their “ray-gun” which also featured a screen which you could flick between the views from different cameras – quite dis-orienting, but fun!’
- Dice Productions’ Hunt For St Patrick’s Festival Blogger – ‘St Patrick’s Festival is finally back online in the form of stpatricksbirmingham.com. We’ll be looking to get a dedicated volunteer blogger for it soon, and get some much needed updates on there.’

- Gigbeth, it’s some gigs, in Digbeth – It is! And I’ll be there with bells on! I can’t wait. Like Jon Bounds, I’m looking forward to seeing the 4Talent line-up and The Destroyers. If you’re a fan of The Destroyers, catch Mama Matrix at The Rainbow tomorrow night, who are in the front bar as part of the Consider It Done Gigbeth Fringe event. I remember seeing them years ago when they were ‘Mama Matrix and The Destroyers’. Not sure why they split into two, but both bands are still of a similar, mental vein.
- Another Byte Of Banality: S.A.D Blog Entry – Poor, depressed Midge. Perhaps he’s coming down with this cold that’s working its way around Digbeth. Yes, I like to break the big local news – there’s a cold going around Digbeth. All the dancers at ACE dance and music are coughing away, including my flatmate. This does not bode well for my big Gigbeth weekend and I’m not happy about it!
- LIVE REVIEW: Release The Bats – ATP/Capsule Halloween Party – 1st November @ Custard Factory, Birmingham – A review that’s caused some rather angry reactions for saying OM were ‘total shit’.
- The Next Social Media Surgery for Voluntary Organisations in Birmingham. – The last ‘one-off’ went so well there’s to be another on Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 5.30pm to 7.00pm in BVSC.
- Custard Factory – Punch announce BASS09 theme: Inspired by Africa and Africans – ‘The aim of this year’s theme is celebrate and explore Africa’s influence on the arts scene. Working with mainstream and grassroots organisations, we will also be encouraging a broad range of audiences to participate in and experience the global impact of African cultural expression.’

- A diarising jazz musician discovers Digbeth – ‘Digbeth is very interesting. it has vintage shops, and theres this place called Custard Factory which holds an art gallery, some shops, a small broadcast radio… mini minor shops. Basically, quirky interesting things. And here I found the elusive violin shop that I’ve wanted to visit ever since I got here…Also, there is a pub by the corner of a road that is exactly like the many we saw at Stratford – all Tudor. Genuine Tudor too by the looks of it. Where they had a wider upper floor compared to the lower one.’ I wonder which pub he means?
- The exhibition and after « Rescue Geography – Phil Jones stops to take stock and look ahead at the end of the Rescue Geography exhibition.
- Release The Bats – I was too hungover from the Ikon Eastside closing party to go, but Pete Ashton made it and took some great photos. ‘The gig itself was excellent. I wasn’t too bothered with Wooden Shjips in the context but Pissed Jeans were great, Om were surprisingly suitable…and Shellac were as fantastic as I had hoped. Really tight, really entertaining, really quite scary. Thank you Jenny and Lisa Capsule for bringing them to Birmingham!’

- Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra to be based at Custard Factory – ‘The start of November sees the launch of the BGSO – Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra…will give lgbt people & their friends the chance to perform wonderful music, meet new people and socialise together in a welcoming and supportive environment.’
- Custard Factory – Bennie Gray’s manifesto to avoid Detroitification of Birmingham – ‘What Birmingham needs right now is dozens of informal Custard Factory-type organisations helping to unleash the multitude of small enterprises which, given the right backing, are ready to spring forth from the garages, spare bedrooms, colleges and sheds where they have been honing their nascent skills and ideas and waiting for the right opportunity for too long.’
- Custard Factory – Rhubarb ready to harvest – ‘Rhubarb Radio, the community radio station based at the Custard Factory, has quietly been pulling the pieces together over the last few weeks and is pretty much live.’
- Plus+ Touring the city with the Walking Tours – Ben Waddington is ‘a Birmingham-based historian with an especial interest in architecture, industrial history and typography’. He’s giving guided typography tours for this year’s Plus festival including a ‘Digbeth Type Tour: Exploring use of typography and handwritten letterforms in industrial Digbeth side streets. The area’s history revealed through its use of type.’ These will take place 12.00-1.30pm Weds 5th-Fri 7th Nov. Other tours are Baskerville’s Birmingham, Blue Plaques tour and City Type Tour.
- FREE training « Creative Launchpad – ‘Business Planning for a Successful Creative Business’ on Tues 11 Nov in Birmingham, plus other dates elsewhere.
- Laundry – an association of multi-disciplinary artists. – Laundry Open Lab Nov 6th-9th at the Custard Factory, a profile of international projects and partnerships, both current and propositional.
- Film Dash: And the winner is… – TTV Team for their film’s ‘charm, humour, the use of non-conventional filming techniques and the use of the city.’ I do hope Thingamagoop found his way home from the Digbeth dustbin he ended the film in. If he did, chances are he’s getting jiggy with the Flip machine the winners were given as I type.
- Capsule Blog » Points mean prizes… – A reminder that this Saturday brings the Capsule/ATP Release The Bats Halloween party in Space 2 at the Custard Factory, with an unmissable line up of: SHELLAC / OM / WOODEN SHJIPS / PISSED JEANS / LIGHTNING BOLT + DJ ANDY WEATHERALL
- Custard Factory – A Creative Marketplace for Digbeth / Eastside? – There has been investment ‘in the development of Digbeth and Eastside as a Learning and Leisure Quarter and a centre for the creative industries, particularly the digital media sector…One of the project ideas now under discussion is the establishment of a Creative Marketplace.’ Take the short, simple survey to help determine whether or not there will be one and what form it may take. My first thought was ‘what the hell is a creative marketplace?’, so I was grateful to Created in Birmingham for linking to the explanation here.
