Getgood Link: BBC News – Does peace and quiet always take priority over loud music?

BBC News – Does peace and quiet always take priority over loud music? – Problems encountered by the Ministry of Sound nightclub make the BBC look at the bigger British picture, which of course leads them to Digbeth’s The Rainbow and The Spotted Dog. John Tighe has dire warnings about where this might lead:

“They are going to close down Digbeth, the only area of Birmingham where live music is played.”

Many thanks to Andy Mabbett and Editorialgirl for the heads up on this one.

    The Rainbow to throw a motherf***er of a motherf***er of a party

    Kent David by Pete Ashton

    Kent Davis by Pete Ashton

This email from Kent Davis, the adorably pantomime rock ‘n’ roll landlord of The Rainbow, deserves publishing in it’s entirety.  I must warn you he swears like it’s all big and all clever. Aw, bless.

Well what a year it has been.

Street parties, noise abatement orders, Raise the roof parties, license suspensions, Joss Stone’s, UB40′S and too many memorable nights to remember (as with the 60’s – if you remember it – you weren’t there).

How can we round things off and demonstrate our gratitude to those that matter most – the unyielding support of Rainbowheads young and old – be it our promoters, artists who have performed, friends who come regularly, residents who have supported our campaigns – or those who have just discovered us for the first time.

Simple.  Do what we no we can do best.  Throw a motherfucker of a motherfucker of a party. Anyone who came to the Rainbow Birthday bash (in the dim distant past of April) – knows just how good these can be. Format will be similar – we will be giving personal invitations to the dearly beloved, arranging a free champagne reception, free hog roast and 30 dj’s from our best loved Rainbow brands – all of whom will be restricted to a 10 track playlist (we will set the criteria) – either in the bar, courtyard or the lovely heated Rainbow Marquee on the street outside the pub.  And of course you will all be expected to come in fancy dress – 70’s style (music/film/tv/fashion etc).

FRIDAY DECEMBER 11TH. KEEP THE DATE FREE. CONTACT US FOR INVITES.

If you’re lucky enough to make it to the A-list, be sure to dress like Kent on a good day and party like it’s 1979 in order to Keep Digbeth Vibrant!

Getgood Link: The Stirrer – Birmingham City Council meeting to discuss noise in Digbeth

The Stirrer – News that matters, campaigns that count for Birmingham, The Black Country and beyond – Birmingham Council is holding an open meeting on 24th November to discuss the issue of licensed premises and noise in the area, enabling some of the concerns raised about The Rainbow pub and the Spotted Dog to be discussed.

There will be three presentations – from Environmental Health, Licensing, and the planning department – and the chance to quiz Council officers about future policy.  Although publicans are the main target group of the evening, it is open to anyone who cares about the area.  In an email to local residents, Spotted Dog landlord John Tighe has said:

This looks like it could be an important meeting. We do not want to let the Council get away with ticking a box saying that they’ve consulted everyone about noise issues, by hosting a meeting that no-one attends.

The meeting is being held by Regulatory Services at the Council House, Rooms 3 & 4, at 18:00pm on 24th November 2009. Anyone who wishes to attend should register in advance with Sophie.Mackay@birmingham.gov.uk.  If you’d like to ask a question but can’t attend comment it and John Tighe will make sure it is asked.

BBC – BBC One Programmes – Inside Out West Midlands, 02/11/2009 – The Digbeth Noise Abatement issues is one of the ‘three surprising stories from the West Midlands’ featured on Inside Out, 7.30pm BBC1 tonight. ‘Is the growth of city centre living threatening live music?’ asks Mary Rhodes. Sadly, it would seem so. This unfortunately clashes with the Digbeth Residents’ Association meeting at 7pm in the Paragon Hotel tonight, so set your recorders.

The story also featured on Nicky Campbell’s breakfast show on Radio 5 Live this morning – you have one week to listen again.

Getgood Link: A great summer by John Mostyn

A great summer « John Mostyn’s Blog – John Mostyn reflects on Glastonbury and this gets him thinking about The Rainbow noise abatement nonsense, and how Digbeth could be an ‘urban Glastonbury’:

The noise abatement row rumbles on but the City is really missing a major opportunity here. Digbeth is currently the home to more than 20 venues, it’s full of galleries, creatives of all sorts and some fine engineers and metal bashers – a unique environment.

People shouldn’t have to wait a year for for the chance of a festival to share good music and good company – in a city as big as this there should be somewhere where you can do that anytime and Digbeth is the place. It has buildings and space that aren’t going to be used for anything else in the next decade or so. We should have all the creatives and promoters in the area working with the City Council and land owners to plan a quarter mile wide party zone for the people of taste of the West Midlands and further afield – now.Let’s not build more apartments that lead to everything being quietened down, let’s build budget hotels to house the people that would come from around Europe to this cultural quarter. When Supersonic is on later this month look at where their audience comes from and what they bring into the City as an example of what can be done – currently against the odds.

Digbeth – Could be the jewel in the City’s crown said Professor Michael Parkinson. Could be an Urban Glastonbury all year round say I.

The Stirrer – News that matters, campaigns that count for Birmingham, The Black Country and beyond – Here’s a little poetic ditty from Stirrer poet laureate Brendan Hawthorne about the row over the Rainbow:

If you were to buy a house
    Would it be
    Next-the-sea or
    If you could
    A secluded wood
    Or pipedream
    Banks of bubbling stream
    Maybe your preference
    Has an urban reference
    A city centre complex
    A modern duplex
    With skyline windows
    And streetside side shows
    All the bustle
    Of round-the-clock hustle
    Convenient shopping
    And metro hopping
    But if you choose
    Don’t get the blues
Or the bird with loud music
    Or shouted word
    If extraneous noise
    Annoys
    When moving in
    Next to existing din
    Flats with poor insulation
    Only cause consternation
    And if you feel anti-social
    Towards the locals’ local
    Perhaps you should think
    Over your pretentious drink
    And decide yourself to go
    Thus preserving the culture
    Of Birmingham’s Rainbow

Getgood Link: The Hearing Aid: Cllr Martin Mullaney…genius.

The Hearing Aid: Cllr Martin Mullaney…genius. – I met The Baron and The Baroness last night. They’re lovely. They’ve even convinced me to go to real live music gig of ‘gay disco’. That’ll be fun. Anyway, here The Baron reacts to Councillor Martin Mullaney’s televised, ill-informed contribution to The Rainbow debate:

Shouldn’t our Councillors be trying to make our City a better, more vibrant and attractive place to live, work and visit? Shouldn’t they be standing up for a local business that helps some of our best new bands, DJ’s and promoters make a living? Shouldn’t they make the effort to find out the facts before making a lame ass appearance on local TV? I forward a motion to abate Cllr Mullaney.

    I second that.
