The night at the Rainbow Warehouse featured acts such as Clark, Health & Efficiency and Gangpol and Mit. During the run up to the event the Synth Eastwood boys were running all over the city to get footage for the night. Above are some of the results. There may be some people you recognise!
One of the best bits of the evening for me is the visuals of famous film clips which cut away to green figures acting out the same scenes. Watch the video from 1.15 mins onwards to see what I’m talking about – it’s a brilliantly striking effect and that must have taken them bloody ages to master, a labour of love I really fell for.
‘Merz’ is a nonsense word invented by Dada artists Kurt Schwitters that was used to describe his collage and assemblage works made of scavenged and scrap materials.
Everyone is invited to make collages with artist Elizabeth Rowe. There will be an array for printed materials to use, and people will be encouraged to swap, share and alter each other’s work.
I AM CAMERA « More Canals than Venice – An exhibition at Boxxed, The Wild Building on Floodgate Street, which launches with a private view Friday 11th June (7-9pm) and stays on display until 19th June:
I Am Camera is a collective showcase of work put together by a group of emerging and established artists who currently live in and around Birmingham. The exhibition will feature the work of 25 artists and disciplines spanning Fine Art, Documentary, Landscape and Fashion.
Under Construction « More Canals than Venice – Tonight sees the launch of Under Construction, an exhibition of work from fine art students studying Foundation Art and Design at Birmingham Metropolitan College. It’s on display until Friday 14 May at The Works gallery, 130 Pershore Street.
The show is, as the title suggests unfinished work, previous works and works for your consideration…The show will feature the work of Liam Bradnick, Carly Brady, Hannah Breakwell, Hannah Chinnock, Rose Dunne, Claire Fitzpatrick, Josh Hall, Robyn Hope, Sophie Huckfield, Jake Laffoley, Sarah Matthews, Bethan McKnight, Lydia McNally, Hattie Price, Bodean Pye, Nikki Salmon, Helen Shipman and Andrew Warr.
The 16 Hour Beltane Disintegration « More Canals than Venice – If you have time to kill this bank holiday weekend, you could do much worse than spend a good deal of it at The 16 Hour Beltane Disintegration, 22 Green Street from 8pm this Sat 1 May. The fun lasts throughout the night until midday Sunday 2 May.
The night will feature Mama Matrix, Vinny and the Curse, Club Primative, Ultimate Spinach and Ronco K-Tel as well as many others. Tickets are £5 in advance and can be bought from Polar Bear or Armadillo in Kings Heath. Dress: ‘Garlands, laurels and animal masks’ !
Couple of interesting things happening at The Mixing Bowl Theatre in the Custard Factory. The Major Arcana « More Canals than Venice – Pixie Sixer picks up on the exhibition resulting from Jak Flash’s photography project based around the 22 Major Arcana Tarot Cards.
The exhibition is 12-16 April 10-4pm at the Works Gallery at Jubilee Works, Pershore Street. The private view is 12 April, 6-9pm.
The night will feature award winning short films, promos, art films and will be followed by a disco to raise money for the DEC Haiti Appeal. There will be a screening of Oscar short-listed multi award winning short Gone Fishing, Shooting People Short of the Year 2009 A Supermarket Love Story, BAFTA winning short Brown Paper Bag, Bouncer starring Ray Winstone and Paddy Consodine, animation from The Brothers McLeod, as well as great shorts from local film makers. There will also be a series of promos by dub-punk multi-media threesome Jackdaw with Crowbarwho will be playing/performing on Saturday 27 at A Plasticine Party for Flatpack Festival.
Atsuhiro Ito « More Canals than Venice – What looks to be an astounding concert at VIVID this Wednesday 10 March – Capsule present Japanese musician/artist Atsuhiro Ito:
He uses a device he has made called an Optron, fluorescent light tubes with integrated guitar pick-ups which are sent through guitar amp stacks. ‘When a voltage applied to the tubes is altered, the lights flicker and the pick-ups harvest the electromagnetic noise perfectly synchronized with the flickering light. The intense noise creating a visual hallucination and the sounds veering from some kind of extreme techno to outright noise. ‘ Wow.
