Harry Palmer: Darknosis scientific think-tank laboratory investigations at the PhD show. – Birmingham: It’s Not Shit – Eccentric Archoeligist Harry Palmer is spending a week inside a cage at The Edge on Cheapside as part of his Darknosis project in the PhD exhibition.  He’ll be writing a daily diary of the experience on BiNS:

…the PhD show’s mythological think-tank investigation, conducted by Harry Palmer, seeks to discover the relationship between the banana plantation and lost civilisation concerning the Hawaiian Mauna Loa tribesmen and women. Mythological hoaxes have been reported suggesting that banana worship and ecological disaster were aligned to the Indian rope trick in which the Darknosis Scientific team sought to define and clarify on their 1917 expedition to this Pacific Ocean Island.

I went to the opening of the exhibition and it was bizarre, great fun and strange.  Harry and his colleagues sorted bananas within the cage whilst waitresses mixed with audience, handing out crisps and trying to bag a husband.   A little tip – if you offer the workers inside the cage a little something, you might just get a banana in return.

The PhD show is on at The Edge until 25th Sept.

Harry Palmer: Oneself, a bedroom and a pulsating unit – Birmingham: It’s Not Shit – Harry Palmer reveals ‘a little slice of installation’ of the forthcoming PhD exhibition at The Edge:

A live webcam relay across the electronic data field (aka the internet) will hopefully pulsate personal mythological investigations from inside my purpose built metal cage. This metal cage will house my bedroom (and myself for one week 24/7), relocated for the purposes of in-situ discovery. Those familiar with my eccentric archaeological approach to date will recognise the trait – to investigate the world on location, in locations. This PhD show is therefore housing myself and my bedroom as a portal of gestating stories – fact and fiction. The Transformative Darknosis Psychic Centre of Research (myself and my metal cage and bedroom) within the PhD show has been designed to alter my consciousness once more – perhaps presenting more misrepresentation and new understanding from previous identifiable traits that have attempted to describe me and my world amongst us. You are invited!

The opening is this Friday 18 Sept from 7pm.

Public meetings took place here in the 18th Century.’ It was this sign and its significance combined with his love of hedgehogs that inspired Harry to talk openly about the safeguarding of this lovely creature.’

Public speaking outside St Martin’s Church

Harry Palmer talks about hedgehogs from Nicky Getgood on Vimeo.

On Saturday afternoon I went to see Harry Palmer of Eccentricity revive the practice of public speaking outside St Martin’s Church by the Bullring.  His speech on Hedgehogs drew in quite a crowd, beating the nearby preacher despite not being albe to match his ridiculously loud soundsystem in volume.  If you’d like to learn more about looking out for hedgehogs should go to West Midlands Hedgehog Rescue and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.  Both organisations will tell you to NOT FEED THEM MILK.

Dom’s following talk extolling the virtues of alternative relationships gave everyone a lot of food for thought and ignited debate.  I think the conclusion was to not conduct this type of relationship with someone who has an anger management issue.

Harry hopes this will be the start of a series of talks that will re-establish the tradition of public speaking on this spot.  There is talk of investing in a soapbox and a megaphone.

    • Harry Palmer: Birmingham’s hedgehog crisis. – Make it to St Martin’s Church on Saturday afternoon to hear plight of the ickle, prickly things. ‘This will be followed by Dominik Kai Brotherton who will publicly speak about alternative relationships and why they have a lasting impact.’ Sounds bizarre enough to be fascinating.
    • Custard Factory Flea Market – The Antiques Diva gives us the lowdown on the Sunday arts and crafts market. ‘Stalls range from the bizarre to the truly wonderful. Japanese baby clothes, vintage and handmade garments, rare records, original photography and art, crepe suzettes, pottery, kitsch collectables and homemade fudge are a small taste of what’s available.’
    • A Creative Masterclass with Michael Wolff – Creative Republic offer you the chance to join the team of Michael Wolff ‘a champion of design and innovation’.  ‘We have invited Michael to take on the challenge of developing a fantasy brief for that imaginary role, a creative director for Birmingham. This event is not a lecture – those attending will be participating and expected to contribute actively during the evening…we plan to run a session as if we, the creatives, were part of Michael ’s team . How would this team market the creativity of the city? How would Michael brief the first meeting of this campaign team? What would the immediate actions and priorities be in the first 90 days? Come along to find out.’ The event is at Fazeley Studios next Thursday 27th November from 5.30pm and is well worth signing up to the Creative Republic Charter for.
    • Birmingham Central – The Big City plans outlines the options for each of the policy areas. Let’s see, do we want Digbeth to be Start-up Digbeth, Business Digbeth or Living and Working Digbeth? Or all of the above? And how will it connect to the core and other outer quarters? Ta to D’log for bringing this to the wider web.
    • UB40’s Red Red Wine pub becomes a victim of the Credit Crunch – Birmingham Eastside blog features the Sunday Mercury’s coverage of the closed-down pub, with UB40’s Red, Red Wine video that was filmed there for those feeling nostalgic. Local ‘UB40 fanatic’ Helena Payne said, “The Eagle & Tun was an historical venue for UB40 and their fans, so it’s really sad to see it boarded up and shut down…it’s been closed for a while now, so although we really hope someone will take it over, we’re not hopeful that will happen. I don’t know what’s in store for the building. It may turn into apartments or it could even be knocked down.”

    Faunography

When Harry Palmer suggested I write an article for the forthcoming edition of Eccentric City, I decided to expand upon a blog post idea I already had in mind – a trail of Digbeth animal life, both real and painted/sculpted. This I did with the help of Pete Ashton’s great photography, and it looks like my words are finally going to appear in hard copy print!

It was great fun to do and we ended up stumbling across far more than I was aware of, or could include in the article. I gave poor Pete the fright of his life when I suddenly pointed and screamed, “THERE’S A GORILLA!” And I really enjoyed getting to meet the sheep in Mr Meat Ltd up close. Guardoggy was unfortunately not at home. I felt the inevitable google map of the trail warranted its own page, so click on the Faunography tab to see it. Let me know if I’ve left any of your furry friends out.

Goodbye The Hedge, hello new Edge

Building work is well underway at The Edge. I was sorry to see Harry Palmer’s old studio The Hedge be dismantled, a gorgeous Hansel and Gretel style cottage created by artists Pete Hadfield and Martin Humphries with residents Lee and Harry. Pete Hadfield decided in The Edge’s early days that it needed something that declared it was ‘not poncey’ and definitely achieved his aim – I had a real soft spot for it. But as Sandra Hall says, ‘out with the old, in with the new.’ Take a peek at how it’s progressing at the Outersight Halloween Horrorshow there on Saturday 1st November.

I must say The Hedge came to mind when I saw Heater & Ivan Morrison’s Pleasure Island at Eastside Projects. I’m liking these cute and cosy creative spaces in Birmingham.
