Grand Union spring opening « D’log – ‘The arts project space Grand Union, aka Unit 19 on the Fazeley Industrial Estate, reopens for Spring on 27th March 2010 (event: 6pm-9pm) — and is part of the Open Studios from 12-5pm on 27th and 28th March 2010.’
Birmingham, B29: secret spring garden door – Not to be outdone by B29, Digbeth has a secret door too, on Fazeley Street. If only I could work out how to open it….”OPEN SESAME!”
Multipack: Hack the Planet – Blog – Digital Birmingham – This Sat 20th Feb The Multipack, “a community of multi-talented Web professionals from across the West Midlands” are holding a hack day at One Black Bear, 191 Fazeley Street from 10am.
The aim of the day is to build a Web site or app that encourages Web people like us to think about how we can reduce the size of our carbon footprint, both in the office and on the road.
In terms of people who should attend, whilst there will be a number of web designers and programmers who are interested, I’d encourage anybody to come along who has ideas for how we can use the web to encourage people to become greener. Newcomers are certainly welcome, although no spectators–there’s no reason why people can’t chip in, and maybe learn a thing or two in the process!
A friend mentioned this building demolition going on at the top of Fazeley Street to me, so I went along for a look. I was immediately struck by the BB logo. Does anyone know who BB were, what they did, what BB stood for? Does anyone know what’s set to stand in its place?
The Studios are beautiful and it is starting to become a hub for creativity, which in our minds is a about time. The people behind Fazeley Studios have obviously recognised that creative people don’t always want to work in damp and dirty places such as the Custard Factory and clients want to visit clean and well-presented studios.
The Tea Factory? – Substrakt propose something creative be done with the empty Typhoo basin and factory buildings, supported by Kate Beatty’s lovely photographs.
It seems like old factory’s make for successful ‘creative hubs’…So how about the Tea Factory?
Typhoo Tea’s premises on Bordesley Street were in use from 1892 to 1978 and now remains largely unoccupied….The Custard Factory is obviously a great asset of Digbeth, but the retail element suffers due to lack of footfall. Developing the Tea Factory could provide an enticing link from the city centre to Digbeth, and it stands proud at the end of Fazeley canal which could be an awesome feature.
Random Eastside Photos – Masshouse, Etna House, Aston University and more – Simon Howes went walkabout with his camera and posted the results on Birmingham Eastside. This one’s my favourite, purely because it lets me ask what on earth is going on with this lovely building on Fazeley Street? Is it being done-up or knocked down or something else? Or will it just stand there in its current sorry state for a while?
Swain & Louise embrace and challenge ideas of lunar cycles and female hysteria. This voyeristic approach to a tender subject is an opportunity to see what really goes on behind closed doors …
What goes on behind closed doors when one is on their ‘lunar cycle’ is not a lot. And that’s exactly what the films show the suffering wire manequins doing – soaking in the bath, lying in bed and monging on the sofa. All to a soundtrack of of what sounds like underwater whale moaning, which sounded pretty close to what my stomach blares into my brain once a month.
Harnessing Lunar Hysteria will be on at Fazeley Studios until Friday next week.
The creatives hanging around here tend to carry cameras. Here’s some results.
Karen Strunks Photography: B4AM – Digbeth – The seriously talented Karen Strunks wanders Digbeth in the wee small hours and talks about her experiences. Can’t believe I didn’t pick up on this until she posted the above film on YouTube.
I like Digbeth, it has a lot of history and is one of the ‘untouched’ areas of Birmingham. It hasn’t been redeveloped to death and its face hasn’t completely changed.
Midge digs punk – The Digbeth Slacker goes to a lot of punk gigs around here, mostly at the Wagon and Horses, with his camera. I really like this picture of a Punk Rock Pooch. Aw.
