I’ve arranged a little treat outing for tomorrow evening. Oh Yes. A special visit to Friction Arts’ fantastic exhibition Echoes From The Edge on Cheapside. It’s an amazing, immersive experience featuring the voices of locals such as John Tighe and yours truly telling our stories. It’s a brilliantly entertaining and accessible exhibition, if you need any more convincing read my previous review of it.
If you’d like to come meet me tomorrow (Monday 20th May) in the Spotted Dog, Alcester St at 8pm. There’s a rumour that those staying behind in the pub will be watching some Irish filum about potato blight.
As you can see, I’m pretty keen to get all and sundry to go to Echoes From The Edge so please come if you can. After seeing the exhibition we’ll return to The Spotted Dog for a debrief, where we can embarrass John Tighe with what we’ve heard.
Hopefully see you tomorrow!

Last Saturday I finally got to experience Friction Arts’ Echoes From The Edge. And that really is the only verb to use here – you don’t go and see it, or watch it, or look at stuff and play with it a bit – you totally immerse yourself in and experience artistic interpretations of people’s memories of Digbeth and Highgate.
The installations are pretty amazing, none of which I want to spoil by giving too much away. But as you go through them you see, hear, touch and smell young and older people’s memories of the area, their journeys to and from here and trinkets and experiences (good and bad) they’ve collected along the way. After which get the chance to tell your own stories and share your impressions over a nice cup of tea.
It really bought the Digbeth of past and present to life and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s one not to be missed and I can see myself getting quite annoying in my quest to get everyone I know to go.

Nick Booth recently bought my attention to James Yarker’s review of the Ikon Gallery’s John Wood and Paul Harrison exhibition, which ended with the immortal ‘leave only your pets behind.’ I read that line, loved it and then felt very jealous for not having thought of it myself for Echoes From The Edge. So I’m just nicking it: take all of your nearest and dearest because they’ll love it just as much as I do and leave only your pets behind. Apart from well-behaved dogs, I can imagine dogs feeling quite at home. You’ll see why when you get there. Double check the dog thing with Friction Arts when you call 0121 772 5185 or fill in the online form to book. Echoes From The Edge is on until 30th May.

Echoes From The Edge Opens This Week! – Well, last week actually (I’m behind with my blogging – my bad). But I won’t get a chance to see it until this Saturday because it’s so ridiculously, sell-out successful. So I’ll have to make do with this taster until then.

Birmingham Post – History of Digbeth, Deritend and Highgate exhibition opens – Friction Arts’ forthcoming exhibition Echoes From The Edge, is featured in the Birmingham Post:
The exhibition is navigated in a tour group of 12 people at a time, who are met by an artist-facilitator and then left to explore the exhibition alone.
The tour proceeds through the rooms and visitors are encouraged to delve into the exhibition. At the end of the tour the audience sit down at a dinner table for refreshments and a short facilitated discussion about the experience.
Lee Griffiths, co-director of Friction Arts, said: “Echoes from the Edge will be the first stage in a three-year project to accurately reflect a unique, historical area as it undergoes its biggest changes for 50 years.
“The long-term ambition is to create a community-inspired, living history museum in the neighbourhood, which grows and changes with its environment.”
The exhibition is running at The Edge, Cheapside from 23rd April to the 30th May. Booking in advance is essential and places are limited to 12 spaces for each tour of the installation. You can book individual or group places via the Friction Arts website, emailing info@frictionarts.com or calling 0121 772 6160.

Echoes From the Edge is Coming! – Things are taking shape down at The Edge on Cheapside:
We’ve got a real K6 phonebox…a world war two bombsite and a pub all taking shape in the space, alongside a host of interactive gadgets and installations under construction.
I can’t wait to see the finished result.

Echoes from the Edge is a Friction Arts project concentrating on the history and stories from Digbeth and Highgate:
Over the next three years or so we’ll be working on ‘Echoes From The Edge’. A collaboration with ‘Touchable Stories’ of Boston, USA to work with the communities surrounding our HQ on creating interactive living history exhibitions and a living archive for the histories and stories of the people of Digbeth, Deritend and Highgate.
We’ll be interviewing residents, workers and other deinizens of the areas to unearth their stroies, their concerns and to articulate these back to a wider audience through creating art exhibitions that are at once accessible and unintimidating and conceptually and technically professionally executed. The first exhibition will open next easter as a ‘taster’ of a larger exhibition in 2010/11 with a permanent community owned, living archive space as a long term ambition for the piece.
Contact Friction Arts if you have a story you think they’d like to hear.
