Another Byte Of Banality: All Quiet On The Digbeth Front – Midge is telling porkies – he’s no slacker, he’s a very busy boy. He gives an update on the Eccentric City Auction, working at the newly opened Urban Village and getting Raynauds in his fingers for his trouble (I like a man who suffers for his art) and blogging for Fizzpop (Birmingham hackerspace).
Another Byte Of Banality: Country Punkins – The Digbeth Slacker is heading down to the Wagon and Horses on Saturday night ‘for my regular fix of noise and attitude but the real diamond here is lurking at the bottom of the bill , Bo Pilar and the Mountain Valley Boys. Alt-Country shenanighans well worth the £2:00 door tax alone.’
Flatpack Festival: Ikon Gallery – ‘Ikon and 7 Inch Cinema present a weekend of fIlm screenings, performance and discussion’ at the IKon Eastside on Fazeley Street on the weekend of 14 March. On Saturday 14 March ‘Filmmaker Guy Sherwin, with Lynn Loo, introduces a selection of his work, including his astonishing performance Man with a Mirror.’ And on Sunday is John Madin: Architect, ‘A rare screening of this BBC portrait of the man who designed Birmingham Central Library, first broadcast in 1965. This event explores Birmingham’s architectural legacy, and includes a variety of archive film clips plus an introduction by writer Catherine O’Flynn.’
nikki pugh » signage – Coming accross the above ‘Ouch’ on today’s Digbeth tour by Ben Waddington reminds Nikki Pugh of other strange signage she’s found on her travels. You’ll have to bear with me for the footage of Ben and Richard Trengrouse’s tours, I’m hoping to have time to get through it over the Christmas break.
An old style boozer with ~100 capacity upstairs function room complemented by a decent sized beer garden (covered in a stroke of genius by a large army surplus tent), staffed by efficient friendly bar staff and stocking some half decent beer. With a regular roster of faces and some great gigs…Hopefully it can survive the upcoming redevelopments which are threatening to put the kybosh on other (well established) Digbeth music venues…
The creatives hanging around here tend to carry cameras. Here’s some results.
Karen Strunks Photography: B4AM – Digbeth – The seriously talented Karen Strunks wanders Digbeth in the wee small hours and talks about her experiences. Can’t believe I didn’t pick up on this until she posted the above film on YouTube.
I like Digbeth, it has a lot of history and is one of the ‘untouched’ areas of Birmingham. It hasn’t been redeveloped to death and its face hasn’t completely changed.
Midge digs punk – The Digbeth Slacker goes to a lot of punk gigs around here, mostly at the Wagon and Horses, with his camera. I really like this picture of a Punk Rock Pooch. Aw.
