Along with the usual October Irish Heritage Group meet up this month it was also the AGM, in which Nicky and her wonderful work on this website were specifically mentioned.
“We have greatly appreciated the assistance of Nicky Getgood, the proprietor of the Digbeth Blog website, who has included news reports of most of our events sometimes including a video of the entire event. Her website could be regarded as a sort of local newspaper for Digbeth, but much better having moving pictures and sound, do log in the address is www.digbeth.org .”
Mike Walsh has also kindly provided us with a copy of the Chairpersons Report.
Indeed, the range, strength and originality of the voice of this singer-songwriter had the intimate audience at the Spotted Dog mesmerised and would take any artist a long way, but there’s more.
For a start, this is an artist who is prepared to put her heart into her compositions and has an honesty and freshness that most established singers struggle to find. Managing to be confident and unpretentious at the same time, she’s got a demeanour that could melt an iceberg or indeed a heavy metal fan.
Supersonic this weekend! But what else is on? « More Canals than Venice – Absolutely loads, according to PixieSixer. Ikon Eastside is showing the work of Raqs Media Collective, Eastside Projects is showing the work of Joanne Taham and Tom O’Sullivan and VIVID continues the Participation film exhibition. And as if that weren’t enough:
There is also a launch event on Friday 24th from 7-9pm at The Bond (located opposite Ikon Eastside on Fazeley Street) for the new Ikon offsite project, Hey for Lubberland! Artists Simon & Tom Bloor have specially adapted a canal boat using geodesic design and dazzle camouflage. After Supersonic weekend, the canal boat will be based in Brindleyplace and transport passengers around the area. Timetables for boat trips can be found on the Ikon website.
Sounds brilliant, and I’m kind of sorry I’m planning to be halfway to Devon by then. Also look out for the Organic Beer Festival at The Anchor Inn (with organic barbecue on Saturday) and Babak Salari at The Edge on Saturday evening:
Binder | The Personal Blog of Karl Binder – There is a Dog War in Fazeley Studios, some are outraged that the fluffy friends have been barred from the premises, whilst others welcome the decision. Which side are you on?
BIRMINGHAM STREETART Part 10 Digbeth – The ‘latest in the operation digbeth art movement, more bigger n better artists have hit the scene in Birmingham n hopefully judging by this video, i hope there is more to come’.
The local graffiti was discussed at the last Residents’ Association meeting and there’s something of a local divide here. Some, like me, love the slightly anarchic life it injects into the area whilst others feel it drags Digbeth down and makes it look scruffy. Unsure if there’s a way those two parties can find a happy compromise, but it’s an interesting debate.
Remember that The Rainbow, the home of Jazz Club, is still being threatened by closure due to a EPA Abatement order. Please do all you can to keep this cultural hub alive and well.
