The Radar Magazine | Created in Birmingham – As Digbeth is South Birmingham, this new magazine celebrating the local cultural scene will no doubt be of interest to many.
This one brings together a bunch of people I’ve heard of (Lucy McLauchlan, Mac 1, Matt Watkins, Gavin Campbell) and a bunch I’m as yet ignorant of (Andy Tattoo, Glenn Anderson, Jon Paul Hollinsworth, Kevin Kafesu, Guy Carlos, Kosmic Neil, Lisa Travers, Richard Coldicott, Skank, Stuart Styles, Tony Graffiti and Victor TX). The launch party will be on Thursday 24 June from 5pm at the Sauce Gallery (Custard Factory).
As One | Created in Birmingham – “no-one sees past a high vis jacket and a purposeful look….” says street artist As One, who decorates Digbeth rather a lot. I’ll be keeping an eye out for him, then.
‘SUR-FACE’ | Created in Birmingham – Chris Unitt’s spotted the forthcoming art exhibition SUR-FACE at The Works Gallery on Pershore Street from next Tues 23 Feb.
The ‘SUR-FACE’ exhibition represents a visual response to the word ‘surface’. The theme captures the essence of the exhibition as the ambiguities of the word ‘surface’ allows for wider expression and interpretation of the concept.
Exhibition is on display Tues 23rd-Thurs 25th Feb 9.30am-4.45pm, with a private view on 23rd Feb 5.30-9pm.
Craftspace Craft Collective | Created in Birmingham – News that Craftspace will be in the Custard Factory’s Vaad Gallery on Saturday 23rd January, 12-6pm with a ‘Craft Collective event aimed at encouraging young people from inner-city Birmingham to develop their interest in craft.’ Craftspace say the project will ‘focus on ideas of guerrilla craft, DIY Craft and Craftivism’, which isn’t how I traditionally think of craft activities because I’m an old fuddy-duddy, so I’m guessing it’s a nice and fresh approach.
Made in the Midlands | Created in Birmingham – Thanks to Chris Unitt for letting me know De Montfort University’s MA photography students are exhibiting their work at the Custard Factory gallery Friday 11 to Saturday 19 December 2009 – it’s so hard to find out what’s coming up at the gallery space these days.
