birminghampost.net – Campaign to save the grand old houses of Birmingham’s Moseley Road – Me and Barnard look a bit glum over the state of the boarded up Georgian houses on Moseley Road, and who can blame us?
The Birmingham Post found out that BDO Stoy Hayward, administrators of bankrupt Concept Development Solutions, are in the process selling 106/Flynn House, 102 and 98 Moseley Rd – ‘although the details of the buyer have not been disclosed’.
What might be happening to the boarded up 94 Moseley Rd remains as mysterious as its owners Award Developments Ltd of Sparkhill, who don’t seem to have any contact details at all.
As yet I’ve had no response to the queries I’ve sent to local councillors Tahir Ali and Chauhdry Rashid. Councillor Yvonne Mosquito forwarded my query to Birmingham City Council’s Director of Planning but I’ve not heard back from them either. Ho hum.

Nose Abatement
Birmingham Post – Nose abatement notice for Custard Factory events firms – B9 Events and Soul Factory, who organise all the big all-nighters and that at the Custard Factory, have been handed a Noise Abatement notice so they can join The Rainbow and The Spotted Dog’s gang.
Which is bad for the future of noisy, night-time events under the railway arches at the back of the Custard Factory, but great for the proof-reading fail that is ‘Nose Abatement’. As local Sub-Editor Fiona Cullinan said, it’s ‘Not quite the new Wanky Balls, but still a rather lovely headline typo.’

Birmingham Post – Custard Factory restaurant’s row with landlords over music events – Matthew’s Restaurant in the Custard Factory is reportedly ‘considering legal action’ for seemingly much the same reason Rogue Play Theatre felt the need to move out:
Matthew’s has accused the Custard Factory of showing a lack of consideration by allowing promoters to stage large-scale night-time events which have resulted in the restaurant losing thousands of pounds in revenue.
Fine dining and club culture is not a good mix, it seems.

Plug pulled on 150m Connaught Square scheme in Digbeth – Seems that patch of brown, barren land opposite the coach station is set to remain just that for a while:
Connaught Square was supposed to turn a patch of rubble-strewn wasteland opposite Digbeth Coach Station into a mixed-use site with 658 new apartments, a four-star hotel with sky bar and a new Irish Centre, shops, restaurants and a spa.But now Connaught Square Ltd, the subsidiary of the Irish-owned Naus Group set up to deliver the ambitious plans, has gone into administration and the scheme’s future is in jeopardy.

Birmingham Mail – Restaurant Review: Matthew’s of Birmingham custard factory, gibb street, digbeth. 0121 224 7730. – Did Richard McComb and Paul Fulford go to the same restaurant? Whilst Richard talks of ‘car crash fine dining’ in the Birmingham Post Paul found it to be ‘food that spoke of a chef with no small amount of either personality or craft’ and gives the place four stars.
Cheers to Midge for spotting this one.

UB40 played their Raise The Roof gig at The Rainbow last night, raising publicity to the campaign against the Noise Abatement order as well as money for a new, sound-insulating roof. Photographer Karen Strunks listened to her gut instinct and went to the gig sans press pass, but managed to sweet-talk her way in (she’s good at that) and got some great photos.
UB40 gave their support to The Rainbow because it is under threat as it has received a noise abatement order from local residents (or resident). Although the landlord Kent Davis has agreed to build a noise insulating roof, there was still more funding needed. UB40 stepped in, and the sales from the tickets and takings behind the bar will go towards the new roof. Digbeth is a vital part of Birmingham’s cultural scene and the music in and around the area plays an important role. I hope that tonight, The Rainbow has managed to raise all the funding needed. As the local saying goes “Keep Digbeth Vibrant!”
If you missed the fun, you can listen again on Rhubarb Radio, to this very set (courtesy of Music as Culture):

The gig has received widespread news coverage, featuring in the Birmingham Post and on BBC News, who ask:
But if it can take a handful of complaints to trigger a noise-abatement order, what is the future of the live music scene in the area?
What indeed? Time will tell.

Birmingham Post – New live music venue for Digbeth given go-ahead – Birmingham Post report about the new live music venue on Oxford Street being given go-ahead, despite recent problems faced by the Spoted Dog and The Rainbow. An old industrial unit is to be turned into a live music venue made up of three rooms: two for live performances ‘from indie and progressive rock bands and also recorded music’ and the third for a bar. There will be an outdoor “themed courtyard” enclosed within the railway viaduct.
Apparently measures have been taken to minimise noise disturbances, but I do wonder how long it will survive before getting a Noise Abatement Order.

Birmingham Post – Business – Business Comment – City View – City View: Time for Digbeth to have its own BID – The Birmingham Post’s Anna Blackaby argues ‘maybe it’s time for the Digbeth business community to put its money where its mouth is and get its own BID up and running.’ A Business Improvement District a a Colmore Row could help to tackle a range of issues:
Top gripes include its lack of fee-free cash machine where you don’t have to fork out £1.75 for the pleasure of accessing your own hard-earned cash, dark streets which make an evening walk from the beautifully-refurbished Fazeley Studios back to the main bus routes of Digbeth High Street an uninviting prospect for lone female workers, and a distinct lack of signage which leaves the out-of-town visitor traipsing down from the Bull Ring markets in the vain hope of finding the promised land of Birmingham’s creative quarter they have read about in Creative Review.

Birmingham Post – Developer of Abacus Building in Digbeth enters administration – A friend of mine put in an offer to buy an Abacus apartment hours before reading this article, which prompted him to re-think.
Concept has been the subject of controversy after Birmingham City Council did not require the firm to carry out a noise report when it applied for planning permission to build the Abacus Building.
The decision sparked the anger of nearby venues who have subsequently been dealt noise abatement orders following complaints about music from their venues being audible in the flats – with the most recent being The Rainbow.
Old House Holdings is the umbrella firm above a number of construction companies including Digbeth Coach Station developer Ashford Construction which was forced to cease trading last month amid crippling debts, halting progress on the £15 million flagship project.
This is not good news for Digbeth – affecting the development of Digbeth Coach Station and putting a question mark over the upkeep of Abacus Apartments, at least in the minds of prospective buyers.

Birmingham Post – News – Evidence of Stone Age man found in Digbeth – Hey, that’s no way to talk about John Tighe. Oh, hang on, that’s not what Neil Elkes is talking about:
Archaeologists have uncovered remarkable evidence that stone age man lived in the centre of Birmingham more than 10,000 years ago. The settlers used basic flint knives to hunt and cut meat and used fire to clear areas of woodland for grazing and growing food.
They then threw their flint knives away outside Curzon Street Station in Eastside. Does this mean we’ll have a Time Team in Digbeth? Fingers crossed.
