Lisa Z – Acorns Sahara Desert Trek 2010 – Digbeth resident Lisa Zdravkovicis is doing a Sahara Desert Trek this Sept in aid of Acorns Childrens Hospice. Here’s why:

    • I am a befriender volunteer at Selly Oak Acorns Children’s Hospice, working one to one with life limited children and/or siblings in my free time after working a fulltime week. I’ve also helped with house keeping duties and quiz nights.
    • I have a soft spot for Acorns Hospice. Most people assume the hospice environment is sad or upsetting, it’s quite the opposite, plenty of fun and laughter is essential for the children, siblings and parents/carers, helping living out the best of their lives.
    • It is a very worthwhile charity helping life limited children and their families. Quoted by parents as “A life line.”
    • I wanted a goal to challenge me to get back in shape, discipline myself and support a charity at the same time to inspire this.
    • I have reoccurring back/hip problems, which can be so severe I can’t walk. I’m concerned this could be triggered during the trek, but want to challenge this.
    • I’m going to face a new environment, heat, dirt, extremely basic living, working through this with a group of people I don’t know, face flying fears AGAIN! This also means taking my annual leave from work and money out of savings to enable me to raise Acorns’ profile and hopefully complete the challenge. There’s going to be various highs and lows and further self development, all for a good cause!

To train herself physically for the challenge, it seems Lisa is taking long walks around the Digbeth and Birmingham area and blogging about her progress. As you can see, Lisa’s taken some great photos.
