Sovinec by Jindřich Štreit

Exhibition opens: Friday 29th January, 18:00-20:00

Where: Centrala, Unit 4 Minerva Works, 158 Fazeley Street, Digbeth, B5 5RT

Centrala invites you to the opening of Sovinec by Jindřich Štreit, one of the Czech Republic’s most important documentary photographers.

Primary school teacher Štreit has photographed the people of his home village Sovinec in the northern part of the country for over 40 years. His frank, striking, and often startling images caused the Czech authorities to imprison him in 1982, resulting in the loss of his teaching role.

Despite this, Štreit persevered with his photography, and opened his house as a community contemporary art gallery. Today it is a remarkable cultural centre that attracts work from around the world.
