Michael The Shopkeeper
As you’ll have seen, Carl has posted some exciting news about a new convenience store with a free-to-use cashpoint near the Birmingham Coach Station on Digbeth High Street. The Shopkeeper himself has commented, saying the store will open 22 April, the cash machine will be installed in the next two weeks and ‘Digbeth just got better!’

The Shopkeeper is none other than Michael, who emailed me these couple of images which show what the front of the store will look like.

It seems Michael is well up for an opening ceremony for the ATM. I spy a very special party – I wonder if The Anchor can lay on a special Cashpoint real ale?

Is it time to get our hopes up once again? Walking past the small row of shops next to Digbeth Coach Station this morning I noticed that two of the shops are being refurbished into one.. this is good news, but look here:

That green sign says: “Free To Use Cashpoint, Coming Soon”
It’s very possible that could actually be a Natwest branch of bank being opened there. Anyway, I hope I am right; I do have a history of getting your hopes up. :-)
Update: The Shopkeeper has replied to this very post with more information. It sounds very exciting. See here.
The current newsagent which is located a few doors away will be relocating into the new site and converting into a Convenience Store. We will be providing an improved retail offer which will include a Free to Use ATM in conjunction with Nat West – the contract with the supplier is signed and sealed, the machine will be installed in the next two weeks.

Back in December, Carl contacted National Express to see if a much-needed cashpoint would be installed in the new Birmingham Coach Station. They answered that ‘there are plans for a cash machine to go in early 2010′, which made Digbeth residents very happy.
Whilst spending New Year in the coach station, I lost count of the number of times I was asked, “Where’s the cashpoint?” Unfortunately, the new ticket machines bear an uncanny resemblance to ATM’s, which caused much confusion, especially for those who’d celebrated the New Year hard.

A few days ago I was reminded about the awaited coach station cashpoint by promoter of all things Brum Pixie Sixer, so I emailed National Express asking if there were still plans for one and when it might be installed. I received a reply saying they thought it would be ‘coming soon’, but they’d check things out and get back.
Unfortunately their investigations established that it won’t be coming as soon as many of us might like. A lovely lady wrote to me explaining that she had ‘Had a chat with our man in charge of the cash machine. He informs me that banks aren’t installing new points at the moment because of the economic climate.’ Oh dear. It seems we must wait for the banks to recover from the credit crunch before they treat the coach station (and Digbeth) to a cashpoint. Until then, we’ll need to keep paying that extra £1.50 or get cashback with that.
However, as Dave Harte commented yesterday, ‘As much as we’ve all moaned about lack of signposting and cashpoints perhaps having neither is your greatest asset’ in preserving the ‘industrial/arts balance’ of the area. So it could be a cloud with a silver lining.

The ticket machines are not cash machines – the coach station does not have those yet. Unfortunately they look a lot like cash machines, which meant throughout the night revelers would run towards them like they were the holy grail, only to walk away looking confused and disappointed. The staff at the Information Desk said they get asked ‘countless times‘ each night, “Where’s the cashpoint?”

"Where's the cashpoint?"
Patience, travelers. The cashpoint is coming soon and rest assured, this momentous occasion will be marked with the pomp and ceremony it deserves. Watch this space…

With the completion of the Birmingham Coach Station, I wandered over the new shiny tiles hopefully looking for a free Cashpoint. I was so disappointed that I could not find one, so I decided to email National Express about the matter:
Hi,
First of all I’d like to compliment you on the completion of Birmingham
Coach Station. I had a wander around yesterday and the facilities and
building is amazing. Now i have a query as a regular user of this Coach
Station and as a resident of nearby Digbeth. Currently I feel the station
is lacking a Free Cash Point. If your customers need to get cash out their
only option as I can see is to use a pay for Cash Point over the road in a
news agents. Do you have plans to add a cash point, if not would you
please consider this?
Many Thanks
A few days later I am happy to report that Amanda Dudley from National Express responded as follows:
Thank you for your compliments
There are plans for a cash machine to go in early 2010 the hole is in place behind the cladding with a room at the rear as specified by the bank.
Good news fellow residents and Digbeth fans :-)

Birmingham Post – Business – Business Comment – City View – City View: Time for Digbeth to have its own BID – The Birmingham Post’s Anna Blackaby argues ‘maybe it’s time for the Digbeth business community to put its money where its mouth is and get its own BID up and running.’ A Business Improvement District a a Colmore Row could help to tackle a range of issues:
Top gripes include its lack of fee-free cash machine where you don’t have to fork out £1.75 for the pleasure of accessing your own hard-earned cash, dark streets which make an evening walk from the beautifully-refurbished Fazeley Studios back to the main bus routes of Digbeth High Street an uninviting prospect for lone female workers, and a distinct lack of signage which leaves the out-of-town visitor traipsing down from the Bull Ring markets in the vain hope of finding the promised land of Birmingham’s creative quarter they have read about in Creative Review.
