Video Progetto at Grand Union

video progetto

Go square-eyed at Grand Union on Fazeley Street with Video Progetto, an exchange between Grand Union and 26cc (Rome) of Italian and UK artists’ videos, which are being screened until 16th May.

Monolith travelling through space

I turned up rather late to the launch on 8th May, so missed quite a bit, but I did get a chance to enjoy Karin Khikberg and Reuben Henry’s ‘Monolith’:

The Monolith from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: a Space Odyssey is seen travelling through space at high speed to a happy-go-lucky jazz tune. This contrasts with images of the Monolith on Earth. It stands among building sites, modernist constructions and natural landscapes with the same haunting sound which is heard in its presence in Kubrick’s film.

Monolith on the porch

Which was great as I’m a huge fan of the film.  Apparently its appearances on earth were marred by ‘a somewhat pessimistic view of humanity’s (mis)use of the intelligence with which it has been blessed’, but it gave me the impression of Monolith Goes On Holiday, a bit like when that garden gnome disappeared and returned with holiday photos.

Because I’m such a philistine, I also got to enjoy a bit of wanton destruction from local lads Juneau Projects. Grand Union is open Thursday to Sunday 12-5pm
