Birmingham Post – Review: Matthew’s of Birmingham – A rather scathing review of the new restaurant in the Custard Factory that declares ‘Matthew’s is car-crash fine dining’. Oh dear.

Free State of Digbeth

Don’t you agree that restaurant critics are the bottom-feeders of journalism?
This review was rather cruel. The poor chaps at Matthew’s haven’t been in business long, give them a chance! I’ve eaten there and the food was very nice.
“restaurant critics are the bottom-feeders of journalism” – what does that mean? Should some things be exempt from criticism because they’re ‘new’ or ‘trying hard’ or in a certain area of the city? We can’t wrap every aspect of Digbeth culture in cotton wool – protectionism doesn’t work.
I think a business that’s ‘new’ or ‘trying hard’, or even old and more established, should be treated fairly, regardless of where they’re located. And this review did read as being incredibly harsh.
is another bad review in today’s metro news as well, i’ve yet to see a sparkling review of the place.
Working in the custard factory I see the place at all hours and they are hardly packing the place.
I have to say i’m really not sure what they are trying to achieve, didn’t realise the place was open initially until a wobbly sign in the window declared that they where.
As a fellow tennant have seen no flyer telling me what they do, no invitation for a drink and a “come and see what we are about”
When I did cross the square one evening, only about 8:00pm, the place was deserted and the first thing I saw was a set menu at £49 for two. From that I put 2+2 together.
To put it into context the main reason I hold a studio at the Custard Factory primarily because it is cheap, £49 buys me a weeks rent AND electricity.
Would like to try the place for myself but can’t justify the cost.
As for giving them a chance, well i’m not a food critic but what I know about business is the set up of the place isn’t going to have been cheap and it can’t be selling many £50 dinners so unless something dramatic changes and changes quickly then they really aren’t going to get that chance :(
