If Dalston Is The Coolest Place In Britain, God Help Us All – In The NME Office – It’s not the article I found interesting here, but a comment on it left by ‘Whom?’ which argues Digbeth, not Dalston, is the coolest place in Britain:

Digbeth in Birmingham is the coolest place I have been to in this country. I’m glad the NME have ignored it. People from London have their heads so far up their bumbums which makes anywhere in London pretty undesirable. Places like the Custard Factory, The Rainbow, And all the random warehouses are constantly doing something creative and fun but it always gets overlooked. Id rather have all the good stuff overlooked by magazines and the media than live in Shoreditch anyday.

Okay, a bit in the ‘angry anti London’ vein but I definitely agree with the first point – Digbeth is the coolest place in this country. Biased? Moi?

Will be a little less cool when The Rainbow has to close at 11pm. They’ve had a letter from Environmental Health to say that their Rapid Response Team witnessed another “noise nuisance” from the apartment of Digbeth’s professional complainant on the evening of their terrific birthday bash, last Friday. These wankers are persisting in deliberately misrepresenting “audibility” as “nuisance”.
Please help – we need national publicity.

Whilst iI am not in favour of The Rainbow having to close it’s doors I am in favour of The Rainbow taking some responsibility for the volume of litter that is generated by it and its guests – beer bottles, gig fliers, take-away wrappers are knee deep in the streets that emanate from the venue after a gig. Some social and environmental responsibility does need to be enforced.

Drop Beats Not Bombs this weekend will probably be their swan song. Enjoy while you can … and, afterwards, write to the Council and thank them!!!

  4. This is more about the pub than the warehouse though. It’s a crying shame regardless and winds me up something silly. How one person can disrupt the nightlife of Birmingham is ridiculous

When someone moves into an area withhh well E established music venues it should be a case of “buyer beware” otherwise planners should not give planning permission for residential use!

There must be prior cases like this that we can learn from…

I don’t understand why ppl would move to an area with an established and well known industry that that, they would find problematic living next – and then tries to change it?
Would the ppl have the negative impact on a business and it’s employee’s if they had moved next to a trainstation or 24 hour supermarket or a motorway – No, they would not have a leg to stand on. I
This is only being alowed to happen because it’s a music venue and not one of the above.
Digbeth was a very good place for planners, home builders, buyers and sellers to make money until recently. The cynic in me suspects that this is a convient and timely get out now Bham is saturated with new flats that are no longer going to sell due to much supply, lack of borrowing and falling prices.
This is Bhams cultural heartland that has been providing a place for art, music and innovation to flurish for many many years. You only have to walk around the place to see the positive output from thousands of individuals and groups. It’s a precious and much needed breeding ground for our young peoples talents, hearts and minds – especially when kids are up against they are today – no other place in Bham gives young ppl that opportunity aswell as Digbeth. The Rainbow is key to that, a venue that gives new musicians and artists chances. Loose it and loose another channel through which young people can grow and become positive ppl.

    @ Epilogue
in regards to your comment about the streets being knee deep in rubbish, what a load of **** i am a worker at the rainbow and we clean the street after each party, we make sure the street is clean to stop complaints so if any thing you need to have a word with the council about its street cleaners, because we do our bit, the people who are complaing need to take it up with the owners of the building as it was them who cut costs in the building of the flats i.e not sound proofed,

  8. I think the litter problem is Digbeth-wide rather than a venue thing – the Digbeth Food Wastage on this site proves that! The point is – you see road sweeping machines quite often along Broad Street but NEVER around Digbeth. Rubbish around here is a big problem which the council need to address. It would be great if Environmental Health could concentrate on sorting that out rather than threatening vibrant local businesses over one man’s complaints.

  9. The flat owners are pretty dumb. If the likes of the Rainbow close less people will want to move in to the area, this will actually devalue their properties.

Noooooo! You people should have done your research before you moved into such an area. The day they start closing the pubs and clubs in Digbeth is the day i loose complete faith in the Council. Digbeth is an area which pulls crowds due to it’s music culture and should be left well alone.
